Deciding Whether to Use a Drain Cleaning Product
In the event that a sink gets clogged, many people automatically reach for the store-bought drain cleaner they keep in their cabinet. But is this always the right choice?
Drain cleaners contain strong chemicals that have the potential to harm plumbing pipes. When the product generates heat in the process of unclogging the drain, it can soften the pipes at the same time. This is particularly true if you have old metal piping. The chemicals in these cleaners can also cause bad burns on skin, can eat through clothing, and can release fumes that make many people sick.
To be safe, if you choose to use drain cleaning products, make sure you always:
- follow the directions exactly
- wear protective gloves
- make sure the room is well ventilated
- keep children and pets away at all times
Afterward, be sure to wait at least 15 minutes before flushing the cleaned pipe with hot water.
When is it Time for HVAC Replacement?
Would you rather replace your HVAC systems on your own terms or wait until they break down? Being in control of a system replacement can actually save you a lot of money and stress.
You should start considering the possibility of replacing a heating or cooling system after it reaches 10 years old. While not all systems go out this early, it’s still best to consider the options. Twenty years is generally the absolute limit for furnaces and air conditioners. When you start recognizing problems like refrigerant leaks, cracks in your heater, a system that shorts out, or motor failures, it’s more than likely time to replace your old system.
