air filter

As warm weather approaches, Bill Gouty, the founder and president of ServiceOne, located in Orlando and Longwood wants homeowners to understand the importance of changing their air conditioner’s filter on a regular basis.

Per the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, & Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE): Almost every air conditioning system has a filter whose job it is to remove particles from the AC system. As the filter does its job, it gets loaded with more and more particles, which eventually increases resistance and reduces airflow. When this happens, it is time to change the filter.

“Whether you use ServiceOne, or do it yourself, changing the AC filter is crucial,” said Gouty. “If you don’t change the filter, not only will your AC system stop performing well, it will start to become a source or air pollution itself.”

When it is time to change the filter depends on how dirty the air is and the filter size.
When buying a new filter, ASHRAE recommends getting one with a Minimum Efficiency Rating Value of MERV 6 or higher.

Gouty offers a good way to remind yourself to change the filter, “If you have a typical one-inch filter, change them every month when you receive your power bill… it’s a great reminder tool. If you have the 4”-6” thick models of filters, change them every 6 months.”

Even if the filter doesn’t look dirty, after about 30-days it is dirty. By the time the filter is obviously dirty, it is causing more wear and tear on the system and costing more to operate. “So, the additional $25-$65 you might spend changing your filter more often, will be offset in system repair issues and added utility bill savings,” said Gouty. “Not to mention, you are cleaning the air in your home, creating a healthier environment … and that’s a great thing!
