Service One Asks, Do You Need More Insulation?

With Florida’s summer upon us, your AC is working harder than ever. And, if your home is not quite cool and comfortable enough perhaps you need more, or new, insulation.

The experts at ServiceOne, one of Orlando’s leading AC companies, wants homeowners to know that a poorly insulated home means higher energy bills and an AC that’s straining to keep up with changes in internal temperature.

“Insulation is one of the most practical and cost effective way to make a house more energy efficient, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter,” said Bill Gouty, Service One founder and president. “Unfortunately, many homes in Florida are poorly insulated, either because the home was never insulated properly to begin with or because age and wear have reduced the effectiveness of the insulation.”

Insulation is a miracle for passive energy-efficiency in your home and can save up to 40 percent in heating and cooling bills, especially important during summer in Florida. Insulation works by creating pockets of air that are difficult for heat to transfer through. Since heat travels faster via conductance, solid objects (walls windows, and you roof) conduct heat faster. Insulation layers add air pockets within a fibrous material or through spray insulation. Over time, all of that insulation can settle and become impacted, reducing the number of pockets and reducing the effectiveness of your insulation.

Insulation should be installed in any barrier the stands between cold air and warmer air or unheated spaces and heated spaces. So, in a typical home the most important areas to have well insulated are the ceiling and the walls. Crawl spaces and garages are also areas where insulation can be added to reduce heat loss.

If your AC is constantly running and house still doesn’t feel cool you could need AC maintenance or added insulation,” said Gouty. “We have been serving the Central Florida residents for years and have the expertise to help you weather Florida’s dog days of summer.”
